Generation H20 is an educational resource from Scottish Water which educates young people about Scotland’s most valuable and precious resource and ways to protect it for the future.

We have worked with We Are Futures and Scottish Water since the programmes inception to create informative, fun and engaging content for the lessons featuring the adorable, animated mascot - Droplet. Droplet guides the lessons through a number of themes, encouraging participation and empower young people to take action to protect it.

Production

Throughout this project there has been a number of different filming and animation requirements. We have filmed content in schools to capture the lessons taking part, on a boat in Loch Katrine with a school group learning about the water infrastructure, on-location with 2 young actors filming various scenarios where there is a decision point involving water and even in Scottish Waters laboratories showcasing some of the work that goes into testing thousands of samples ever single day.

This has involved a wide variety of cameras and equipment to capture including the Sony FX6, FX3, gimbals and drones to ensure we got the best content possible from each location.

Throughout all the shoots there has also been the requirement to capture “plates” for Droplet, the animated character, to be composited onto. This is informed from our pre-production phase, working out what we will need for animation ahead of filming the content. These plates will have a focal point where Droplet will be positioned with contextual background action to be happening behind to bring the scene to life.

Post-Production

There were a lot of different outputs from this project across 2 years and for different distribution channels.

Droplet was designed by Always Be Content for use as a printed 2D asset and we then rigged and animated the character to be suitable for video. The voice over was recorded in our in-house studio and then lip-synced as required.

To further integrate the character into certain scenes we added into some practical effects on-location which then interacted with the animation. One of the scenes involved throwing a rock into a river to create a splash, which was then timed with Droplet jumping into the river after delivering a line. Another scene involved having fishing wire round a tap handle and then pulling it on cue to turn the tap off - which when matched with Droplet jumping against the tap gives the illusion of the character interacting with the physical world - just a fun little detail to further engage the audience and ultimately to reinforce the message.
